For many people, the term ‘hypnosis’ conjures mental images of flashy stage magicians putting willing subjects under a mysterious spell and then making those people do foolish things in front of an audience. While hypnotism is a technique that is often included in stage magic for entertainment purposes, there is really nothing all that mysterious about it. Hypnotism is a time-honored technique during which the subject is put into a state of deep relaxation by the hypnotist, and then a suggestion is made or question is asked depending on the purpose of the session. In a deeply relaxed state most people are able to access intuitive information they cannot summon while fully aware and alert. Similarly, when in a state of deep relaxation, most people are much more receptive to suggestion. So, for example, if a person is trying to stop smoking, a hypnotist might make the suggestion that the next time the subject craves a cigarette, he or she will go for a walk or drink a glass of water instead. Contrary to popular belief, no one can be made to do anything while under hypnosis that he or she would not be willing to do while fully alert. Hypnosis is sometimes used to help people retrieve information about crime scenes, and is also an powerful weight loss tool. Hypnosis can definitely help access and develop your intuitive abilities, and as long as a reputable professional is employed there is no reason to fear this technique.

Developing intuition is usually a positive accomplishment, but for about 15% to 20% of the population the problem is learning to block information, not invite it in. People who naturally pick up on the feelings of others, pick up information about others intuitively, ’see’ events involving others, or some combination of all three are sometimes called ‘hypersensitives’, High Sensitive Persons, or HSPs. If you yourself are an HSP, you probably already know this about yourself, and you also know that this is how you were born. It is just who you are. However, having a name for your abilities doesn’t help you manage them. Author Elaine Aron has written extensively about how to manage your life as an HSP, and has a website anyone can visit to learn more about this temperment at www.hsperson.com. Aron’s website provides a wealth of information on HSPs and coping strategies, and also provides a Self-Test that anyone can take to quickly find out if the HSP temperment applies. Also available at the website are back issues of the HSP newsletter Comfort Zone . All of Elaine Aron’s books can be ordered at the website, either together or separately, and you can also find information on upcoming HSP seminars and workshops and find out how to enroll. Being highly sensitive can be a gift, or a curse, depending on how you approach it. The more knowledge you have on the topic, the better your coping abilities will be, and the more your will be able to use your gift instead of resent it.
